Introduction
Designed by Jean-Marie Charpentier and Associates' architectural firm in France, the Shanghai Grand Theatre was completed in 1998, with a total investment of RMB 1.2 billion. The theatre, which is said to be the best opera house in Asia and o­ne of the very best in the world, is located in the northwest corner of People's Square. The Grand Theatre actually has three theatres: o­ne 1,800-seat main theatre for ballet, opera and symphony; o­ne 600-seat medium theatre for chamber music; and a 200-seat small theatre for drama and fashion shows. With world-class operas, ballets and symphony concerts continuously being performed here, the Grand Theatre is now the centre of the city's cultural life.
